Police in Gauteng are investigating a case of murder and six counts of attempted murder after a shooting, reportedly triggered by a street argument, left one person dead and six others injured in Alexandra on May 30.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the incident unfolded in the early hours of the morning on 6th Avenue, between John Brand and Hofmeyer streets. “It is reported that two people were having an argument on the street when one of them drew a firearm and started shooting randomly.”

She confirmed that the victims were rushed to a local clinic, where one tragically succumbed to injuries upon arrival, while the other six were treated for injuries they sustained.

Police have since appealed to members of the public who may have information that could assist in tracking down the suspect behind Saturday’s incident in Alexandra to come forward.

This incident comes against the backdrop of the distressing crime situation in Alexandra. Between January and March 2026, the township recorded 31 murders, an increase of nine compared to 22 murders during the same period last year.

The latest figures place Alexandra as the second most affected police station in Gauteng, and 17th nationwide, for murder cases in the fourth quarter of the 2025/26 financial year.

The six attempted murder counts currently under investigation highlight another rising trend in Alexandra. Between January and March this year, the local station recorded 44 counts of attempted murder, an increase of 17 compared to 27 counts during the same period last year.

These placed Alexandra as the fourth station in the province to record the most counts of attempted murder.

In Gauteng, arguments, misunderstandings, road rage, and provocation have been flagged as common causes of murder. Most of these incidents occur in public spaces. Of note, 37 cases involved two victims, five cases involved three victims, and four cases involved four victims.

Concerningly, Gauteng was the only province to record multiple murders involving 14 victims in the fourth quarter of the 2025/26 fiscal year.

It registered 135 murder victims, second only to the Western Cape, which recorded 141.
