Johannesburg Ombudsman empowers Alexandra youth to demand accountability

Learners at Alexandra High School actively engaged with the Johannesburg Ombudsman during youth month to learn about complaint processes and their right to fair public administration.

The office of the Ombudsman for the City of Johannesburg recently held a youth month outreach programme at Alexandra High School.

The session introduced learners and educators to the office’s mandate, and how to escalate complaints when normal city channels fail to deliver results.

Discussions focused on service delivery challenges affecting local communities, including electricity supply and the upkeep of public spaces.

The response from both learners and school management was positive, with 105 service requests completed during the visit.

What stood out was the keen interest shown by young people in becoming active participants in holding public institutions accountable.

The outreach forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure that residents understand the remedies available to them when they experience maladministration.

The office reminded residents that access to lawful, reasonable, and procedurally fair administrative action is a constitutional right.

Those whose complaints remain unresolved after following the city’s official processes can approach the Ombudsman for assistance.
