Shots fired, one dead as community members loot spaza shops in Alexandra

An unidentified man was killed on Tuesday night during a looting incident in Alexandra.

A man was fatally shot in Alexandra on Tuesday evening (June 30).

Police provincial spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the shooting occurred at about 20:00.

The Gauteng Provincial Joint Operations Centre issued an alert on June 30, noting that violent protests and looting were reported around 8th and 9th Avenue, along Joe Nhlanhla Street.

A video circulating on social media showed several people rushing in and out of a shop along Joe Nhlanhla Street during the incident.

Muridili later confirmed that community members were targeting foreign-owned spaza shops between 8th and 9th Avenue when shots were fired, fatally wounding one victim.

She confirmed that police have opened a case of murder. The victim has not yet been identified, and no arrests have been made.

“Police investigations are underway. The public is requested to report any criminal activities to their nearest police station,” Muridili added.

The incident followed a day of massive protests, with scores of residents marching through Alexandra to demonstrate against illegal immigration.
