Mito Stars stun Blue Birds with second-half comeback in provincial league clash
Although Blue Birds was ahead at the break, it was gone by full-time, as Mito Stars scored three unanswered goals.
An early goal can be deceptive as it often raises hopes that the scoreline will hold, leaving the trailing side chasing shadows for the rest of the match.
That looked to be exactly how the script would unfold when Blue Birds Ladies took on Mito Stars Ladies FC at the Alex Safe Hub on Saturday, until Mito Stars tore it up.

In a tightly contested Safa Women’s Provincial League fixture, Mito Stars Ladies walked away 3-1 victors, overturning a first-half deficit with a ruthless second-half display.
Blue Birds scored first, converting a free kick from just inside their opponents’ half to take an early lead. But unfortunately for the Birds, that early promise would not last.
“In the first half, we started the game well, creating chances that we did not convert, and then we got a free kick almost from the halfway line and scored from it. But after that, I’m not sure if we did everything necessary to win the game,” Blue Birds coach Malvin Khumalo admitted.
He said the issues he identified in the first half were flagged at half-time. But Blue Birds could not have anticipated just how hungry their opponents would prove to be after the break.

Mito Stars flipped the momentum entirely in the second half, adopting an aggressive approach that saw them repeatedly push forward into Blue Birds’ territory.
The pressure told. Midway through the half, Akhona Madidimale found the equaliser, levelling the score at 1-1 and setting the stage for what would be a dramatic finish.
With Blue Birds now rattled and Mito Stars sensing blood, Alwande Qwabe seized a golden opportunity soon after, beating goalkeeper Gugulethu Pitso to hand her side the lead.
The turnaround visibly deflated the home side. Trailing for the first time in the match and running out of time, Blue Birds grew increasingly desperate in search of an equaliser, but their spells of possession became shorter and less composed as anxiety set in.
Mito Stars, by contrast, tried hard to keep a tight backline while remaining a constant threat going forward. That balance paid off in the closing stages when Kgothatso Tsoabise added a third, sealing a commanding 3-1 win.
Mito Stars coach Mito Matola credited the result to his half-time team talk, saying it was the turning point that inspired his side’s three-goal response.
Despite the defeat, Blue Birds remain well placed on the log, sitting fifth with 35 points, while Mito Stars Ladies occupy eighth spot with 26 points.
