Police in Alexandra are investigating an alleged carjacking near the intersection of Lenin Drive and Vincent Tshabalala Road after one of the suspects died from a gunshot wound on September 4.

Police believe the deceased was one of five suspects involved in the hijacking.

Alexandra Police Station Commander Brigadier Vusimuzi Ngubane said officers in an unmarked vehicle spotted the crime in progress. “The police were nearby in private; they saw and tried to stop them. They didn’t stop, and that is why there was an exchange [of gunfire],” Ngubane said.

He said the suspects then fled the scene in the vehicle, with the victim still inside.

What happened in the roughly three hours between the hijacking and the next development remains unclear, Ngubane said.

At around 11:00, police received a call reporting a young man with a gunshot wound on 16th Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, the deceased was identified as one of the suspects involved in the earlier incident. The fatal shooting is still under investigation.

The remaining four suspects escaped with firearms and remain at large, with police working to trace them.

Ngubane confirmed that the victim, who was dropped off elsewhere in Alexandra, was uninjured. The victim later went to the police station to open a case.

This was one of seven carjacking cases recorded at the police station last week. As the investigation continues, police are appealing for eyewitnesses to share any information that may assist in identifying and locating the remaining suspects.
