Mbali and Sizakele Mbele celebrated with a umemulo ceremony in Alexandra
Two young women from Alexandra have marked their cultural transition to adulthood through a traditional Zulu coming-of-age celebration centred on respect and self-love.
Two young women stood at the centre of a traditional Zulu coming-of-age ceremony in Alexandra on September 26, as scores of community members gathered to mark their passage into adulthood.
Mbali Mbele and Sizakele Mbele were celebrated with umemulo, a rite of passage that acknowledges young women who have grown to earn the respect of their elders and community. Dressed in traditional attire, the sisters celebrated as the heritage month drew to a close.

Philisiwe Mpongose, the maiden inspector who guided both women, explained that umemulo is not bound by a strict age.
“Even if you are 19 or 20, it can be done,” Mpongose said. “This tradition grows a girl into a woman.”

Mpongose said what matters most is how a young woman conducts herself, emphasising self-respect and respect for others. She noted that since she began working with young maidens in the area, local teachers have expressed gratitude for the positive social impact on teenagers.

The sisters’ uncle, Themba Mbele, agreed, noting that seeing young women grow up with strong values brings great joy to the family. He added that he hopes the ceremony will help dispel the perception that umemulo belongs only to rural homesteads.
Themba acknowledged that the ritual also signals a young woman’s independence in making her own life choices.

“We have given them the key,” he said, adding that with this trust comes the expectation that they continue to carry themselves with dignity.
Mbali said the experience taught her that a woman must first learn to love, respect, and conduct herself well. Sizakele added that the journey taught them perseverance, patience, and self-respect.
