Government urges motorists to adopt fuel-saving habits

Drivers can improve vehicle efficiency and lower costs by adopting practical habits behind the wheel.

The government has urged all motorists to use fuel responsibly to help lower driving costs.

Advice issued on October 6 outlines how road users can reduce fuel costs, improve vehicle efficiency and contribute to more sustainable transport.

Drive smoothly to cut fuel consumption

Drivers are urged to accelerate gradually, brake gently and keep a steady speed. Fuel use rises sharply at higher speeds, so speed limits should be observed.

Switch off idling engines

Engines should be switched off when a vehicle is stationary for long periods, and unnecessary warm-ups avoided. Errands should be combined, efficient routes chosen, and peak-hour traffic and roadworks avoided where possible.

Regular servicing, the correct oil, clean filters and prompt attention to warning lights also cut waste. Air conditioning should be limited when appropriate, gears changed efficiently and eco-mode used where available.

Choose alternative travel options

For short trips, walking or cycling is recommended where it is safe. Carpooling, public transport and ridesharing are listed as other options.

Avoid panic buying

Motorists are urged not to panic-buy petrol, as this may cause unnecessary shortages and disrupt the fuel supply.
