‘Avanza rapist’ behind bars

It’s hats off to Alex police for a job well done in arresting a man who has terrorised the community with impunity for some time.

Law-abiding Alex residents and parents of young girls have applauded the police for the arrest, as they were delighted by the news that police had finally allegedly pounced on the notorious Avanza rapist.

The rapist was allegedly caught in the act by members of Metro police who were patrolling the streets and noticed a white Avanza which fitted the description of that driven by the rapist, parked at a secluded place. The image of the car had been circulated to various law enforcement agencies.

The Metro police officers decided to investigate and to their horror, stumbled on the rapist allegedly in action with a minor. He was arrested and later confessed to many other rape cases that the cops were pinning on him.

The rapist’s modus operandi was that he targeted the young girls and picked them up as though he was operating a taxi and would then drive them to a secluded place, mainly at the old cemetery, where he would then rape them.

I am sure this comes as a big relief, not just to the parents of the young victims, but also to the girls themselves who were falling prey to this sexual predator prowling the streets of Alex.

One wonders exactly what was driving the man to rape these girls. Only him and God know. The man is said to have a gorgeous girlfriend with curves in all the right places, so what else on earth did he want? As in the words of one of the police officers, he’s o nale ngwanyana o pela-pela [a man with a gorgeous girl] who constantly comes to see him in the cells.

This explains why rape is often considered a crime of perversion. Under normal circumstances, a man with this pela-pela girlfriend wouldn’t trade her for anything, let alone rape other girls. Out of embarrassment, chances were that he would lose her, as she would not want to have anything to do with him after the spate of rapes became come public.
