Mediocre coaches and players will do Chiefs no good, says Rhoo
Kaizer Chiefs can expect to once again bask in the glory days of the past only when the club appoints sound coaches and splurges on top-notch players, says club legend Lucas "Rhoo" Radebe.
Former Kaizer Chiefs and Leeds United legend Lucas ‘Rhoo’ Radebe has described the current performance ‘drought’ within the club as a ‘disappointment and a major source of embarrassment for stalwarts of the Naturena outfit like him’.
“Chiefs is a big club that must always be up there with the best and fighting for honours and glory as opposed to its current situation of only fighting for survival in the league, with a disappointing trophy drought that is almost spanning a decade now,” Rhoo told Alex News in an interview at the crowning of the champions of the Discovery Alex U12 Schools League at the Altrek Sports Facility recently.
“If Chiefs struggles, we as the former stalwarts are hurt as it tends to dent our image and ability to hold our heads high as former products of this esteemed club and it’s a major source of embarrassment for us.”
Asked what he thought the problem was, Rhoo did not miss his words. “Club management is to blame as they hire mediocre coaches and then go out and buy weathered players that are a one-day wonder and bring no value at all to the team.
“Until such time that they wake up and smell their armpits and re-strategise on many fronts within the club, they can kiss the glory times of this club goodbye.”
AmaKhosi Amahle or the Phefeni Glamour Boys, as Chiefs were popularly known during their heydays when they used to rake in every trophy and literally ran out of space in their cabinet, especially during the ‘vat alles’ days of the colourful Putco Mafani and Lewis Tshakoane before him.
Rhoo said what was needed at Kaizer Chiefs was for management to rethink their strategy of appointing coaches and splurging on players, most of whom he said had added no value at all to the club for many years now.
“We need to appoint astute coaches and buy the top-of-the-crop players who will deliver quality on the playing field as opposed to just adding numbers to the team and only then can we expect to bask in the glory days again.”
