Canoeists finish race on a high
Two members of the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, Ryan Wellbeloved of Craighall Park and Simon Spooner of Forest Town, partnered in a Winter Klip River race.
They competed with more than 100 Gauteng paddlers, tackling the rapids of the Klip River from the Heidelberg Road bridge near the R59 in Daleside.
They paddled through Henley on Klip to the Danie Mclean Park in Meyerton, a distance of some 30km with almost 20 obstacles, rapids, broken bridges, or rocky sections amid cold temperatures.
The duo finished the race in 3 hours – right on target for a 10km per hour average – and are looking forward to their first major A Grade white water river race, the Fish River, in the Eastern Cape in September.
Belloord, a West Rand based labour consultancy, sponsors the series of races with giveaways to all entries and lucky draw prizes to all finishers.
There is a prize-giving after each race for those who qualify, with another prize-giving at the end of the year which includes boats, paddles and other river canoeing equipment.
