New PSL season kicks off tonight

JOBURG - The long wait is finally over as the new season of the Absa Premier Soccer League kicks off.

In a few hours, the 2013/14, Absa Premiership season will kick-off when reigning champions, Kaizer Chiefs face returnees to the league, Mpumalanga Black Aces, at the Mbombela Stadium tonight at 8pm.

The Premier Soccer League CEO Brand de Villiers said the league was ready for the start of the 2013/14 season. “The office has been a hive of activity in the last few days as clubs have been busy registering players ahead of the start of the season.

“Judging by what I have read in the last couple of days in the media, people have been waiting for the start of the season with bated breath and are excited to see the return of domestic top flight football. We urge the fans to go to the stadiums and support their teams as they start the journey to claim R10 million prize money that will be awarded to the eventual winners in May next year. It is important for us that the spiritual owners of the game – the fans – come in numbers to watch the matches this weekend,” De Villiers said.

He wished all the 16 clubs luck in their campaign. “We are looking forward to an entertaining season and we are expecting plenty of goals from the teams. I would like to wish all the clubs the best of luck.”

Meanwhile, De Villiers has also taken this opportunity to wish Orlando Pirates, the 1995 African champions, the best of luck as they embark on a crucial journey to Egypt in the Confederation of African Football Champions League group stages match against their opponents and African giants Al Ahly on Sunday afternoon in their bid to conquer the African continent again.
