FNB Stadium ready for the Soweto showdown

It’s all system go for the ultimate off-season derby between two Soweto football giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates which kicks-off at the FNB Stadium on 26 July.

More than 14 million votes have been cast so far for the 2014 edition of the Carling Black Label Cup and voting for the starting line-ups remains open until midnight 22 July, giving supporters the opportunity to make last minute changes to fine tune their starting line-ups for the sold-out event.

Fans have been warned not set their foot or vehicles near the stadium without a match and parking tickets. “Don’t take a chance as usual and hope you will make it through. The no-nonsense Gauteng Traffic has been engaged this time in the place of Metro police.

“The ‘no ticket no go zones’ have been expanded to a cover a much wider and outer area of the stadium in order to avoid the clogging of traffic by motorists without a match and parking tickets.

“If you do not have a match and parking ticket, you will be turned away long before you even move close to the vicinity of the stadium. We want to stamp out the clogging of the traffic,” said Stadium Management South Africa CEO Jacques Grobbler.

His sentiment were echoed by Gauteng Traffic spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo who said her department will do everything in its power to ensure that the spectacular goes ahead without any traffic hitches, including criminal activity such car hijackings and theft.

Benny Magoga from the City of Johannesburg made an impassionate appeal to football lovers to change their habits and learn to use public transport on big match days like this. “This alleviates the traffic congestion which comes with big match or events of this magnitude.”

Close to 300 Rea Vaya buses have been laid out to transport fans on match day, starting as early 9am, including taxis from the Top Six Taxi Association which operates on the Soweto route. Metrorail has also been romped in and will transport supporters from far afield as Vereniging to the south and Pretoria to the north.
