Bluebirds hope for maximum points in Zebras game

ALEXANDRA - After failing to collect even a point from their away and home match against UJ Ladies, Bluebirds women's football team hopes to do just that in their coming clash against Zebra Force.

After failing to collect even a point from their away and home match against UJ Ladies, Bluebirds women’s football team hopes to do just that in their coming clash against Zebra Force.

That encounter is scheduled for 3 August, and if all goes according to the wishes of Bluebirds coach Malvin Khumalo, the match may be played at the Three Square Sports Complex due to the condition of the pitch at the Altrek Stadium in Eastbank.

“It is difficult to play on this pitch now. I believe for our next game we need a much better pitch and hence we shall consider moving it to the Three Square Sports Complex,” said Khumalo, who described his chance of collecting maximum points from the Zebras as 90 percent.

It is no wonder he wants a better playing pitch in order to cruise through his ‘weaker’ opponents as opposed to UJ. Some believe the reason why he preferred to play the tougher UJ encounter on this rough and uneven pitch was to destabilise the opponents’ game flow on a bumpy pitch in the hope of getting the better of them.

This somehow worked in their favour as, although beaten, the score line was a respectable 2-0 as opposed to the 7-0 drubbing at UJ.

“We had a fair share of our own scoring opportunities which, I believe, had we buried them or some of them, the score line could have easily been different,” Khumalo said.

Khumalo said they could have drawn this game had his players not given away a needless penalty in the box by handling the ball, and also failing to clear quickly and decisively in the second goal for UJ.

“We are still on track for our ambition of finishing in the top eight of our maiden season in the Sasol Womens League,” Khumalo said.

He was however unsure what position they were at on the log as it is never updated. “I guess we are in position 10 or somewhere there.”

Khumalo also said he was happy to have finally registered one of their most talented players by the name of Vangile Mnguni. The club had problems with the Free State-born player’s Identity Document, hence they could not register her.

“I am glad all this is over and she is now registered and cleared to play,” he said.

Mnguni has already been on the score sheet after hitting a brace in her maiden game and scoring in the second one, but was unlucky in the UJ game.
