Birds need a sponsor

After surviving their maiden season in the Sasol Women’s Football League on a shoestring budget, Bluebirds have turned their energies towards finding a sponsor for the team.

Coach Malvin Khumalo described their maiden season as one of the most trying times in the team’s history, as they almost failed to honour a number of their leagues fixtures due to financial difficulties.

“I remember at one stage in mid-season we had to beg the police in Alexandra to transport our players in order to honour one of our fixtures, and they gladly agreed to bend the rules and offered us two vans that took my players to the venue of the match and back,” Khumalo said.

He said new teams in the league struggled financially as the league operated a play first and payment later policy. It consisted of two instalments of which the first was after a team had played 15 games, and the second at the end of the season. Despite the financial burden the team managed to honour all its fixtures.

“We therefore appeal to possible sponsors to come forward and help the team to stabilise its finances and ease this burden on its shoulders,” he said. “We need to focus all our attention and energies towards playing the game, instead of worrying about transport issues and other requirements that go along with fulfilling a league fixture. This also impacts badly on the morale and mentality of the players before a game.”
