Shumba FC fail at Gauteng Cup
JOBURG - A team comprising footballers from Alexandra and other townships, Shumba FC, was eclipsed in the 2015 Future Champions Gauteng Cup.
A team comprising footballers from Alexandra and other townships, Shumba FC failed to make it through the group stages of the 2015 Future Champions Gauteng Cup.
Orlando Pirates FC emerged the winners of the cup after a penalty shootout over Jomo Cosmos at the Vaal University of Technology’s Isak Steyl Stadium. Pirates triumphed 4-3 in the shootout to win their second Gauteng Cup title after claiming the prestigious trophy in 2012. Pirates and Cosmos, along with beaten semi-finalists University of Pretoria and defending champions SuperSport United, will now advance to the Future Champions Gauteng International tournament to be played in Soweto from 23 to 28 March.
There they will come up against some of the best U17 academies in the world as they fly the flag for Gauteng in this year’s event.
Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Molebatsi Bopape, attended the Gauteng Cup and described the tournament as a great success for football in the province.
