Malfunctioning floodlights at the Alexandra Stadium have scuppered the return of Alex United to its home base.

Hope City Giants, the prodigal son of Alex football, has been wondering in the wilderness and playing its home games at Balfour Park Stadium for the past year. They were billed to return home on 1 May with a game against arch-rivals, Highlands Park.

One of United’s directors, Nick Nicolaou, said when the stadium was inspected, it was discovered that the floodlights were malfunctioning and the game and all other remaining ABC Motsepe League home games of United had to be returned to Balfour Park Stadium.

United likes to host what it calls ‘Friday Night Football Fever’ at the Alexandra Stadium as this proved to be very popular with the fans as they packed the stadium to capacity each time the team had its homes games there.
