Seven-a-side sharpens children’s soccer talent

ALEXANDRA - Alex youngsters are claiming their own space in weekend soccer games which are dominated by established senior league teams.

The games for boys and girls of all age groups are played at the Altrec Sports Complex’s Football For Hope’s astro turf pitch and at the Three Square grounds.

The talent of the youngsters was on display recently at the Three Square grounds where several teams played practise games in readiness for the 2016 season.

Superstars FC and TDS FC’s U10 played an exciting match with TDS scoring first against the run of play in the first half. A pep talk at the break seemed to have added adrenaline to the Superstars players and they scored twice in quick succession to win the game 2-1.

Superstars coach Chris Mahlobo said these practise matches were fought fiercely. “The sessions help to set a trend of what to expect during the season’s games,” he said.

“We are developing the children to play as a team, realise their talent and understand the hard work expected of them if they are to sustain the momentum throughout the season.”

He said the township had talented youngsters who needed to be nurtured if they were to become professional players.

The soccer matches and the children’s schoolwork would hopefully keep them off the streets and out of trouble, he said.
