The Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association will send winners of their U15 and U17 leagues to represent the township in the Mandela Day Cup.
The Mandela Day Cup tournament will be held at the University of Johannesburg’s APB Sports Complex on 18 July.
Teams vying to represent Alexandra are Malandela Mighty Heroes, Happy Birds, Super Stars, and Alex Young Lions in the U15 division; and Rainbow Stars, Blue Aces, Malandela Mighty Heroes and TDS FC in the U17.
Organised by the Inner City Ambassadors, the tournament will gather teams of both boys and girls in the age categories of U15 and U17 from various regional local football associations from Alexandra, Johannesburg inner city, Soweto, Vosloorus and Cosmo City.
Participating football associations will each receive four soccer balls, two sets of soccer nets, eight corner flags, two stop watches, two whistles and a first aid kit.
Secretary general of Alex football, Mafika Morajane, said they were delighted to have been invited to be part of this prestigious tournament in honour of a great man.
“The tournament also allows the association the opportunity to add another cup to the local calendar on an annual basis, and also affords our players a chance to play with their peers from other association leagues,” he said.
