Goals galore as Alex High hammers Leap

ALEXANDRA - Alexandra High School bounced back from their dreadful performance at the Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, as they demolished Leap High School 11-0 at No 3 Square Grounds.

A rejuvenated Alexandra High School bounced back from their dreadful performance at the Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, as they demolished Leap High School 11-0 at the No 3 Square Grounds.

The match was a fixture of the second edition of the Sibusiso ‘Cosmos’ Zwane Tournament of the Johannesburg East District Schools Football Cup.

In the game against Leap High, Alex High welcomed back some of their star players who missed out on the Motsepe Cup due to the age restrictions of the tournament.

Alex High dominated proceedings with only eight players as the rest of the team arrived late for the game. Tsepiso Mantsunyane completed a brace only eight minutes into the game, as Alex High ran riot scoring a third.

The nimble-footed Vusumuzi Sibiya made it 4-0 in the 15th minute when he converted a great pass from the left wing, as Alex High showed no mercy in front of the goals.

Sidingo Nxumalo, Alex High goalkeeper also got onto the score sheet when he converted an audacious kick from his own half to make it 6-0 before the halftime break. It was goals galore in the second half with Sibiya bagging a hat-trick before he was substituted with eight minutes left in the game.

In the second game of the day, East bank High earned a hard-fought victory as they edged Liberty School 1-0. Liberty had chances to equalise but lacked the killer instinct in front of goals.

The tournament is played over two legs and Liberty will take much confidence from their hard-fought defeat, and will be hoping to overturn the one goal margin in the second leg.

Alex High will play the winner between East Bank and Liberty in the quarterfinals, as it looks highly unlikely that Leap will come back from their 11-0 defeat.

The games are played every Wednesday and Friday with two games on each day. This year’s edition includes netball games which are played at the same time as the football games.
