Hoop to a Better Life

JOBURG - NON-PROFIT organisation Hoop to a Better Life invites Alex residents to its Fun Fitness Fundraising Challenge event scheduled for 12 December.

The event will take place at 3 Square Sports Grounds from 7.30am until 11am.

The organisation runs a health programme for local children and youths to give them a better life through the sport of basketball, and through life skills education that aims to impart skills in leadership and teamwork, as well as a spirit of determination and positive competitiveness.

The challenge will be a health fitness event suitable for the entire family, and will also be a fundraiser to support the basketball programme. The organisation needs funds to support children participating in its programme after the development clinics the organisation conducted in October created huge interest.

The challenge will comprise two hours of aerobics, a Zumba marathon (popular Latin group dance exercise), and boxing activities.

Its organiser, Sifiso Twala, said the event would also be a contribution to national health promotion after a survey by NPO Health Systems Trust revealed that half of South Africans over 15 years of age were obese and that 30 percent of black women have the highest incidence of obesity, followed by white women at 26.3 percent, coloured women at 25.3 percent, and Indian women at 21 percent.

Twala added that if all went well, the challenge would be held annually. The event will be conducted by qualified personal trainers and instructors who, in addition to physical activities, will impart health-related tips and advice to participants on how to keep their bodies in shape after the challenge.

Funds raised by the event will be used to acquire basketballs and sports shoes for children who play barefoot on the harsh outdoor basketball court surface, and playing kits for all age groups. The funds will also be used to support the life skills youth camp scheduled for June next year.

The organisation is already running a campaign called Sole2Soul Shoe Drive to collect playing shoes, and any kits still in usable condition.

The entry fee for the challenge will be R120 per person. Participants will receive a free water bottle and an energy drink.
