Rugby is alive and kicking in Alex

ALEXANDRA - “Rugby is alive and kicking in Alexandra and in five years’ time we’ll be harvesting the fruits of our labour.”

“Rugby is alive and kicking in Alexandra and in five years’ time we’ll be harvesting the fruits of our labour,” said seasoned rugby coach Elias Mpengu, who is also co-ordinator of schools rugby in Alex, manager of the Alexandra Rugby Football Club and volunteer coach at Gordon Primary School.

“I know many people think rugby is dead in Alexandra, no. The sport of rugby is alive and kicking in the township and I am determined, together with other coaches and lovers of the sport, to develop rugby in Alex to its highest level.

“Give us five years from now and you will see wonders. In those years we shall begin to harvest the fruits of our labour,” said Mpengu in an interview with Alex News.

He was speaking ahead of a coaching clinic at the KwaBhekilanga Track and Field for boys and girls conducted by Jaco Coetzer of St Dunstan’s College in Benoni.

Mpengu said coaches had been deployed to various schools around Alex for development coaching, and they were currently working with eight primary schools.

In the high schools programme, Mpengu said Eastbank, KwaBhekilanga and Pholosho were playing in a league which included Marlboro Gardens, Wendywood and Midrand.

He said high schools participated in two league divisions, U15 and U17 and the winners of 2015 season were Wendywood (U15) and Eastbank for the U17 division.

Primary schools had three league divisions, U9, U11 and U13. Gordon won the U9 and U13 leagues while the U11 was won by Zenzeleni which is one of the strong rugby playing schools in Alex.

As part of their winnings, Mpengu said both primary and high schools league winners were presented with new rugby jerseys.
