‘Spiderman’ challenged to produce other Spidermen
ALEXANDRA – Brian 'Spiderman' Baloyi urged to use the Totalsports Alex Safe Hub to produce more Spidermen.
Brian ‘Spiderman’ Baloyi has been challenged to use the newly opened state-of-the-art Totalsports Alex Safe Hub to produce more ‘spider men’.
The challenge to the legendary former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns’ goalkeeper was issued by none other than the president of the South African Football Association (Safa), Dr Danny Jordaan when he officially opened and handed over the facility to the community of Alexandra.
The Totalsports Alex Safe Hub is a product of the refurbishment of the dilapidated iconic Number 1 Square Ground on the corner of 2nd
Avenue and Joe Nhlanhla Street, which is popularly known as Ground #1 and produced the likes of the late Chiefs striker, Shakes Kungwane and many more before him.
Jordaan’s challenge to Spiderman was in response to an appeal from the chairperson of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association, Maisha Molepo who, when he welcomed guests to the official opening ceremony, lamented the lack of players from Alexandra reaching the echelons of Bafana Bafana.
“I am challenging Brian Baloyi to use this facility to produce many more Spidermen and, in that way, maybe your cries for more Alex representation in the Bafana ranks could be answered.”
Earlier, while welcoming the guests, Molepo said he didn’t have enough words to express his joy at the very fact that this ‘pipe dream’ has finally been completed.
“I am happy today and smiling at the same time, for I am going to have a good night’s sleep, as this project of the hub has finally been delivered. There were times when there was a lot of despair as deliberations dragged on endlessly and it seemed it was not going to happen. I am happy it’s finally done,” Molepo said in gratitude to all the partners involved.
Molepo said the people of Alexandra were ‘delighted for this marriage without a divorce because, even if we as partners quarrel, the facility will remain here permanently’.
