Football academy revived
ALEXANDRA – The Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association revives its controversial academy.
The Alex Football Academy will be active for the very first time since its formation three years ago.
This was disclosed by chairperson of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association, Maisha Molepo, who said the academy would play games against its Soweto counterpart as from March. “We have reached an agreement with our colleagues in the Soweto Football Association to arrange inter-academy games between ourselves, which will feature teams from our academies in the age category of U13, U15 and U17,” Molepo said.
The academy was established soon after the death of Alex football legend, Shakes Kungwane on 28 May 2014. Known then as the Shakes Kungwane Alex Football Academy, it was dogged by controversy soon after its formation and the association was forced to drop the name of Kungwane from it.
The academy has laid dormant for the past three years and Molepo said the association was now ready to revive it and ensure that it was fully functional to nurture the township’s abundant talent.
