Aces on a mission to develop Alex football

ALEXANDRA – Mafika Morajane of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association believes Alex football is in for exciting times.

Alex football will never be the same again after the arrival of Alexandra Black Aces.

When Aces sold their Mpumalanga Black Aces Premier Soccer League franchise to Cape Town City before the start of the current season in August last year, they approached the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association and shared their vision of where and what direction football in the township should take.

Aces also promised to inject financial muscle into the association to help it meet its development initiatives and take Alex football to a whole new level. This through holding various tournaments, and workshops for coaches.

They also promised premiership football would come to the township through their senior team, which currently plies its trade in the South African Football Association-run ABC Motsepe League alongside its other Alex counterparts, Alex United and Babirwa FC.

Now, Aces are turning some of those promises into reality, as the club will be hosting a development tournament on 11 February at the Number 3 Square Grounds for its U13, U15, U17 and U19 divisions to play against their counterparts.

Alex football secretary general, Mafika Morajane said football in the township was in for exciting times and described the latest move by Aces as the tip of the iceberg. “We’re expecting more things to come our way as our relationship with them begins to blossom,” a delighted Morajane told Alex News.

By hosting this tournament, Morajane said Aces was honouring the promise made when they affiliated to the association. “We would love for the tournament to be an annual affair, which will be a bonus for us, but that is all dependent on our partner.”

Morajane said the tournament would benefit local football immensely. “We shall get to play alongside a former premiership football club. This will give the opportunity to gauge the strength of our various divisional squads and also prepare them for any inter-LFA [local football association] tournaments that may come our way.”
