Arrows coach and Chiefs player receive awards

JOBURG – Chiefs defensive strongman, Lorenzo Gordinho and Arrows mentor, Clinton Larsen are rewarded for their performance in the months of August and September.

Kaizer Chiefs’ no-nonsense defender cum goal poacher, Lorenzo Gordinho and Lamontville Golden Arrows coach, Clinton Larsen, were voted best player and most outstanding coach respectively for the months of August and September last year.

After impressive performances during this period by the centre-back, which included him scoring some crucial goals in the opening two months of the 2016/17 Absa Premiership campaign, Gordinho was also selected due to his consistent displays at the back for Amakhosi as well as his level of maturity having recently taken a step-up to playing in the elite division.

This is the first time the 22-year-old from Benoni has claimed the Player of the Month award.

Durban-born coach, Larsen who, after guiding Abafana Bes’thende [boys of the backheel], as Arrows are affectionately known to their avid fans, to four wins during the two respective months, became the first recipient of the Coach of the Month award in the current season of the premiership, as he guided his side to the top of the log standings by the start of October last year.

The judging panel, which comprises seasoned sports journalists and media persons, was impressed by the exciting football display of his team.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic coach narrowly got the nod ahead of Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt by masterminding a good turnaround of results following Arrows’ opening day of the season defeat to Orlando Pirates, guiding his team to three wins and one draw thereafter.

During the August/September block of fixtures, Arrows collected 10 points as they registered away wins at Free State Stars and Celtic, a home victory over new boys Cape Town City and drew with SuperSport United. The team scored seven goals during this period.

As sponsors of the premiership, Absa congratulated Gordinho and Larsen on their awards for August/September and said they look forward to the start of what should be an exciting second round of the league.

The league took a break because of the African Cup of Nations.
