Alexico helps keep Alex’s four-team status in SAB League

ALEXANDRA – The SAB Regional League will welcome a new kid on the block, Alexico, after it acquired the status of Gunners for an undisclosed amount.

Alexico, which bought the SAB League status of Gunners, hopes to take the league by storm and position itself as a trailblazer.

However, limited pre-season time to adequately prepare the team may be a spanner in the works.

This was the view of the sole director and founder of the club, Mxolisi Mngomezulu, who is one of the most astute coaches to come out of Alexandra in recent years.

He is also a former technical director of the Alex Northrand LFA and won several accolades over a number of years. He has successfully coached several teams in the Alex Northrand LFA league and had a stint at Orlando Pirates juniors, now known as Pele Pele FC, in the SAB League that he helped gain promotion to the ABC Motsepe League.

Mngomezulu is the first Alex coach to hold a Caf A-Level Licence and also coached Pirates Project X1 that went to Brazil in 2017. He had a stint with Safa Gauteng U21 squad that won the National Championship in 2019.
He will be the coach for Alexico until he acquires someone for the job.

Mngomezulu confirmed buying the status of Gunners for an undisclosed fee, saying it would be an injustice to place a value on the status because of Gunners’ years of investment.

“We are grateful that they chose Alex first to sell their status to before venturing outside, as this meant that they would preserve all the hard work and investments made, only for the people of Alexandra. We needed to keep our Alex fair share of the teams in that league,” Mngomezulu said.

On the impact he hopes to have in the SAB League with Alexico – the ‘ico’ stands for ‘inclusive community organisation’ – Mngomezulu said, “Like any other club owner, we would like to [raise] a storm as we announce our arrival and also set a trend as the trailblazers.

“But we can only do this with the utmost quality, not just on the pitch and technical bench, but all around, including the support staff at the Alexico institution as well.

“We also want Alexico to be more than just a soccer club. We want it to become a beacon of light for young players that aspire to advance their soccer careers to professional level and even go as far as playing for overseas clubs. We’re going to open that channel for them to fulfil their dreams.”
