A ‘Goodnight’ spectacle awaits football fans at FNB Stadium
A ‘Goodnight’ spectacle awaits football fans at the FNB Stadium on November 12 when Masandawana take on Usuthu and the Soweto derby repeats itself between AmaKhosi and the Buccaneers to decide two sides to emerge from the semis for the final of the Goodnight Cup.
The fans of the beautiful game have spoken and the top four teams that will participate in the ‘Goodnight’ matches of the Carling Black Label Cup have been chosen and revealed.
Those are Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and the new boys in the popularity stakes, AmaZulu FC, which has seen its popularity hit the roof following its good performance in the past season that enabled the KwaZulu-Natal side to finishing within the Top 8 at number 7 on the DStv Premiership log standings for the 2021/22 season.
Using the voting system similar to the one used in Carling Cup Soweto Derby, fans of the 16 teams in the premiership were asked to vote for their teams to determine which ones were going to fall in the top four positions to make the semi-final of the now nicknamed ‘Goodnight Cup’.
As expected, ‘AmaKhosi Okuthula Noxolo’ came out tops in the leaderboard, gunning a whopping 490 376 votes, followed by ‘The Ghosts of Orlando’ with 354 472 votes while the team of the moment in the DStv Premiership and African continental football, ‘The Sky is the Limit’, came third with 171 717 votes.
‘Usuthu Lwase KZN’ made it to the top four with 144 829 votes, pipping their nearest rival for the last spot, ‘AmaSwayi-Swayi’ or the ‘Beautiful Birds of Dube’ as Swallows are fondly known to their avid followers, by well over 3 000 votes.
Hailing from Tshwane and eThekwini, both Masandawana and Usuthu bring a twist to the traditional Soweto Derby that fans of the Carling Black Label Cup have become accustomed to over the past decade.
“We would like to send a champion shout-out to the fans of all 16 premiership teams, as the participation in this year’s cup has been great. We responded to the voices of all football fans, and they in turn responded with their support.
“We look forward to the next part of this exciting Champion Coach journey, where the fans will select their starting line-up and then the team captain which we know has been a fan-favourite since it was introduced,” said Carling Black Label brand director Arne Rust.
A lucky fan of any of the 16 premiership teams, still stands the chance of winning a R100 000 cash prize for voting. All matches will be played on November 12 at the FNB Stadium, starting with the first semi-final between Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu FC kicking off at 09:30, followed by the Soweto Derby once more of Kaizer Chiefs versus Orlando Pirates at 12:00.
