Mighty Heroes and River United share spoils in stalemate

A second-half equaliser rescued a point for Mighty Heroes after River United's depleted squad succumbed to a lapse in concentration.

Mighty Heroes and River United fought to a 1–1 draw in their U15 Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association league fixture at Altrec Sports Complex on October 4.

River United drew first blood, leaving Mighty Heroes chasing an equaliser for the entire first half.
Mighty Heroes coach Kagiso Ramoloko said his initial plan was to draw fouls and win penalties.

He fielded younger players in the hope that the opposition would concede spot kicks; while pushing his wingers deep into the midfield so the full-backs could exploit space down the flanks. However, multiple offsides thwarted the strategy.

Ramoloko admitted the tactic failed to produce the breakthrough he wanted. He used the halftime break to settle his team, instructing his players to cool down, pass the ball, and press forward.

The plan paid off early in the second half when Mighty Heroes worked the ball behind River United’s backline to score the equaliser.

On the other side, River United coach Lebohang Sekgoto put the draw down to fielding U13 players due to player unavailability, as several squad members were visiting family. Despite the depleted squad, his team had expected to take maximum points.

Sekgoto said his side played well until a loss of concentration allowed Mighty Heroes to equalise, noting that lapses at the start and end of a match can prove costly. He added that the goal came from his team’s own mistake rather than chance creation by the opposition.
