Editor's note

Schoolgirls give us a chance to see our roles through their innocent eyes

JOBURG – See what our group editor had to say about the recent 'Take a girl child to work' day initiative ...

Giggles of excitement were heard down the passages of our Joburg North branch last Thursday, and there was a flurry of questions and a whole lot of learning as Grade 10s, 11s and matrics from schools in our various distribution areas spent the day learning about our media house.

What a wonderful privilege it was for our newsroom to host this bunch of vibrant schoolgirls, under the banner of Caxton Cares, as part of the ‘Take a girl child to work’ day initiative.

Our aim for the day was to share insights into our careers and show the schoolgirls how our media house operates.

For this, we showed the schoolgirls what all of our departments do on a daily basis and emphasised how important it is that one loves their job.

At the outset, we may have thought that we would be the only ones to impart information and learnings to our guests, but this was far from being the case. This group of schoolgirls posed thought-provoking questions – which included a fruitful discussion with our human resources manager, particularly around issues of dismissal, that was not only educational but entertaining too – and shared their own views and hopes for their careers.

In so doing, the schoolgirls gave us a wonderfully refreshing opportunity to view our roles, as well as those of our colleagues, through their innocent perceptions, which are packed with contagious enthusiasm.

There is no doubt that the positive impact of the day will forever be carved on our hearts and remind us to inject some youthful energy into our daily work.

We hope that, in some small way, our time spent with these schoolgirls will play a role in assisting them to build a legacy for themselves in their future careers.
