Community not happy with smart meters

Some Greenstone and Modderfontein residents are not happy about City Power’s newly rolled out smart meters.

Ward 32 councillor Bongani Nkomo said City Power has started rolling out new smart meters in the area but residents are not happy about it.

“Some residents feel that their current meters are in perfect working condition,” said Nkomo.

He also said that there has been little to no public participation regarding the roll-out and its intended benefits.

“My interaction with City Power regarding the installation was a meeting, where I requested that they provide a presentation detailing their reasons, benefits and timelines for installation.

“We had also agreed that they would appoint a community liaison officer who would be responsible for taking queries and guiding the community,” said Nkomo.

He said this process was not done as agreed.

“I have also made numerous attempts to meet and communicate with them via email, which have yet to be acknowledged,” said Nkomo.

A request for comment was sent to City Power on June 13; however no response was received at the time of going to print.
