Smith off to the PGA of Australia
KENSINGTON – Smith wins PGA of South Africa's Apprentice Championship.
Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club played host to the Professional Golfer Association (PGA) of South Africa’s Apprentice Championship.
Gauteng North professional Terry Smith claimed the biggest victory of his career by winning the event and has been invited to represent the PGA of South Africa at the PGA of Australia’s National Futures Championship in October.
“The win was an amazing experience and something I’ve never felt in my life before. It’s the biggest victory of my career, but hopefully not the last,” said Smith. He won with rounds of 73 on the East Course and then 72 on the West Course for a three-stroke victory on one-over-par 145.

“I played in an IGT tournament at Randpark Golf Club the previous week and I finished tied 23rd, so it gave me that little bit more confidence going into this tournament. I also had great support from family and friends, and a lot of hard work on the range paid off.” He said his putting was also amazing. “I didn’t have a single three-putt the whole tournament. I made a small change to my putting stroke the week before and it helped a lot.”
Smith, who started playing golf at the age of nine and represented Gauteng North as a junior, said he was looking forward to representing the PGA of South Africa in Australia. “I want to do my best there. The PGA is a wonderful community of golfers and we all just want to make golf a better game for everyone.”
