City Power will finish installing the smart meters by the end of June.

City Power spokesperson, Virgil James, said although the installation is expected to take three to four years to complete, they are in the final stage of installations in Greenstone.

The NEWS reported on June 21, that some Greenstone and Modderfontein residents are not happy about City Power’s newly-rolled-out smart meters.

At the time, Ward 32 Councillor Bongani Nkomo said City Power has started rolling out new smart meters in the area but residents were not happy about it.

“Some residents feel that their current meters are in perfect working condition,” said Nkomo.

He also said that there has been little to no public participation regarding the roll-out and its intended benefits.

“I spoke with City Power regarding the installation at a meeting, where I requested that they provide a presentation detailing their reasons, benefits and timelines for installation.

“We also agreed that they would appoint a community liaison officer who would be responsible for taking queries and guiding the community,” said Nkomo.

City Power has disputed the claim.

“City Power did consult the residents prior to the installation of smart meters,” said James.

James also said that City Power had agreed with Nkomo that they would appoint a Community Liaison Officer (CLO) when Region E concludes the CLO appointment.
