EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said as officers were conducting roadblocks around the Edenvale and Sebenza areas, they stopped various motorists to do routine driver and vehicle fitness inspections, as well as roadworthiness checks on motor vehicles.
“During the roadblock, the officers smelled a strong odour of alcohol on four of the motorist’s breath,” said Thepa.
“Breathalyser tests were conducted by the officers, and all four motorists were found to be over the legal prescribed limit.”
The arrested suspects, between the ages of thirty and forty-six years old, were taken to a registered nurse to have blood samples taken, and thereafter the suspects were detained at Edenvale and Sebenza police stations respectively.
Thepa said the drivers were charged with driving while under the influence of an intoxicating substance.
She said they would appear in the relevant magistrates’ courts soon.
