United front aims tackle issues plaguing Edenvale

Ward councillor highlights declining services while encouraging community action ahead of local elections.

In a recent public meeting, residents were reminded that the only way to hold public officials and political parties accountable is by going to the ballot box and making their mark.

This was shared with community members at Ward 18 Ald Heather Hart’s recent State of the Town Address.

The address was held at the Edenvale Chambers.

With the local government elections set to be held later this year, service delivery and talk of change are hot topics.

The State of the Town Address was no different, with attendees eager to hear what feedback Hart would provide about the condition of Edenvale.

Hart said that compared to surrounding areas and towns, Edenvale was in a relatively stable position.

“Some could say that we live in a bubble; we are one of the few towns in Ekurhuleni that almost consistently have water and electricity,” said Hart.

“One of the town’s more consistent problems is urban degradation, littering, and lack of inspectors.”
She highlighted that there had been a slow erosion of service delivery across the city.

“Many long-standing residents of Edenvale would remember that service delivery issues would be tended in a swifter fashion and that trees would be trimmed regularly.”

Hart explained that the city’s ability to provide services had slowly eroded. “There is no doubt that our country is loved, but it is in trouble.”

She said initiatives such as Essentially Edenvale need to be supported.

The NPO is one of several organisations in the community that work towards improving and maintaining the town.

“Edenvale is a town filled with resilient residents. It’s a community that stands together and gets things done.”

She made mention of Hurlyvale and Peter Pan parks, both of which are maintained by and cared for by the community.

“This is what can be achieved by the community getting together and keeping Edenvale neat, tidy and maintained, the way it should be,” said Hart.
