This comes after an increase in the number of home invasions in Edenvale.
Acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, said a number of areas which had been quiet were now being targeted by criminals.
“In so many cases we found that residents and domestic staff leave doors unlocked and even open,” Lt Col Roberts said.
He added that road closures are often the target for criminals.
“We are working with various road closures in Edenvale to ensure residents are continually reminded to make sure their home safety is up to standard,” Lt Col Roberts said.
He added that complexes and road closures give residents a false sense of security.
“Do not under-estimate criminals. If you open yourself up to be a victim of crime, the chances are good that you will be one,” he said.
Lt Col Roberts said residents who make use of domestic staff should educate their employees to make sure that doors are not left open.
“If you are expecting someone to do installations or renovations at your property, inform your domestic staff. Make sure they understand that by letting someone onto the property who is not supposed to be there, they are endangering their own lives,” Lt Col Roberts said.
Ensure domestic staff have access to and know what their sector police numbers are.
“Place a list of important contact details where your domestic staff can easily access it if needed,” he said.
Make sure that alarm systems and panic buttons are in working order.
“Never leave your home open, even if you only plan to be out for only a few minutes,” Lt Col Roberts said.
He also urged residents to report suspicious activities to the SAPS immediately.
