Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo, Jeppe SAPS acting station commander, said he took note, with concern all the issues raised in the EXPRESS’ enquiry. He said the resident will be contacted and his complaints will be addressed. “All other general issues will be attended to through crime prevention operations. The management and the staff of the Jeppe SAPS are committed to serving the communities. While there may be some corrupt officials, the majority of men and women serve with pride. I call upon the community to help in the fight against crime and also report corrupt officials,” he said.
He appeals to the public to join sector forums and community police forums. The community can raise their concerns at these forums.
“There are sector cellular phones in the patrol vehicles with chargers. Eight new cellular phones were recently allocated to replace the old ones and the numbers remain the same. The failure to answer cellular phones will be attended to. Should there be a problem, members of the community are urged to contact 10111 who will relay the complaint through radio to the vehicles for attention. Marching to the station should not be encouraged but rather use this positive energy in working in partnership with the police,” said Brig Mariemuthoo.
He said the SAPS cannot function in isolation. Police officers need the support of the community they serve.
“Let us work together to create safer communities. Crime is reported from all over the precinct and there are hotspots but it is not totally out of control. There are vehicles patrolling and attending to complaints in all sectors on a 24-hour basis. We also work with other law enforcement agencies such as the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD),” said Brig Mariemuthoo.
He said details of all crimes cannot be given out due to the policy on the release of crime statistics. “But information on crime hotspots and the increase of crimes must be given out,” he said. Brig Mariemuthoo added that there is no truth that Jeppe SAPS is hiding crime.
“I call upon members of the community to also actively work with their sector managers of the respective sectors. We will act on information received. There were also numerous successful convictions achieved. Recently seven suspects were arrested and three unlicensed firearms were recovered. These suspects are currently in detention and have been linked to various other crimes,” he said.
