Cleveland SAPS addressing liquor establishments

Cleveland SAPS is trying to establish a strategy to address concerns in and outside shebeens, taverns and nightclubs operating in the precinct.

Malvern residents urged Cleveland SAPS to take action against establishments causing a disturbance throughout the night and criminals targeting people outside these businesses.

Residents who attended a Cleveland Community Police Forum (CCPF) meeting earlier this month said that they are tired of the loud music, drunk patrons harassing people outside these businesses, shootings and robberies.

Captain Peter Ramodisa said operations are held in conjunction with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD).

“The number of taverns, shebeens and nightclubs in the precinct is a concern for us. The businesses which are legal operate until 2am.If residents have concerns with noise and any other problems emanating from these businesses, please report it to us immediately.

“We try our best to address problems. We will allocate more manpower to deal with problems after 2am. We do have meetings with the owners of legal businesses and they will be held responsible for incidents that take place in their premises.

“We can also arrest, fine and close down these businesses if they do not adhere to the law. Illegal businesses will be closed down,” he said.

He added that Cleveland SAPS is also addressing concerns with establishments operating close to churches and areas where they are not allowed to operate, according to the :Liquor Board.
