Dogs stolen in Kensington

Chairperson for the I Love Kensington Association (ILKA), Ms Lornette Joseph, recently had one of her dogs stolen from inside her property.

She said that someone broke part of her palisade fencing and reached into the garden to steal her dachshund.

A security guard at Darras Centre noticed someone trying to sell Ms Joseph’s dachshund in a parking lot and approached the person. ILKA was contacted and Ms Joseph discovered that the dog was hers. She had to arrange to meet with the person trying to sell her dog and pay them a reward to get her dog back.

“I have heard about dog-fighting syndicates in the Troyeville and Observatory area,” said Ms Joseph. She added that suspicions from local residents were raised about domestic dogs being stolen to use as bait for bigger and more aggressive dogs to groom them for dog-fighting.

Yeoville SAPS communications officer, Constable Thabo Malatji, said he was unaware of dog-fighting syndicates in Observatory.

Jeppe SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, said he was also unaware of dog-fighting syndicates in the Troyeville area.

Constable Mpho Mashakane, communications officer for Cleveland SAPS, said that no incidents of dog theft were reported to Cleveland Police Station. She also knew nothing about dog-fighting syndicates in the Cleveland SAPS area.

Ms Joseph advises Kensington residents to make use of the newly formed Pet Findas organisation, which has formed part of ILKA. Lost pets can be reported to Pet Findas which will network through ILKA to find the animal’s rightful owner.
