Hikers raise funds for pupils

A fundraising eco trail hike took place on July 13 at Linksfield Ridge for the St Andrew’s School for Girls outreach initiative called Ubambiswano.

In the spirit of giving and making a difference in aid of Mandela Day, the St Andrew’s School for Girls community helped raise funds to maintain the work that is done in their Saturday School programme.
Ubambiswano is an independently funded programme which the school has run successfully for 24 years. Every Saturday morning, 94 boys and girls from Daveyton and Etwatwa areas in grades 6 to 9 are transported to and from the St Andrew’s School.
In partnership with The Tomorrow Trust, the school is able to support a further 80 children in grades 10 to 12.
In addition to benefiting from the expertise of the teachers and the facilities, the children also enjoy the provision of nutritious cooked meals.
R5 000 funds one pupil per year.
Ubambiswano’s biggest fundraising drive is the annual Eco Ridge Trail which serves a number of purposes. As an eco school, St Andrew’s needs to encourage its community to be aware of its immediate environment (Linksfield Ridge) and to respond to the nationwide appeal to be of service to one’s fellow human on Mandela Day.
This year, 1 800 people ranging in age from five years to grandparents, which also included 200 children from Ubambiswano, walked or ran the Ubambsiwano Eco trail. The energetic participants did the 10km option while the rest of the field completed the 4km walk.
