This campaign is led by the metro’s speaker, Councillor Patricia Khumalo.
“This campaign is aimed at mobilising communities to take responsibility towards keeping their environment clean. This happened in the wake of the City of Ekurhuleni having recently been named South Africa’s Cleanest City,” she said.
Clr Khumalo said the campaign is part of a drive by the Gauteng Speaker’s Forum, led by the Provincial Legislature’s Speaker, Ms Lindiwe Maseko.
“Its aim is to make Gauteng a clean place to live in. The programme was launched during Mandela Month in honour of former president Nelson Mandela,” she said.
She added that this was part of making every day a Mandela Day.
Clr Khumalo, Executive Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele, members of the Ekurhuleni Legislature, members of the mayoral committee and the Trek4Mandela Team were all working at illegal dumping spots in Germiston.
In addition, the Trek4Mandela Team has been in the news recently for conquering Mount Kilimanjaro in honour of Madiba recently.
“Through this campaign, we want to encourage proactive community participation in order to strengthen and maximise the potential of, in our case, a clean Ekurhuleni and thus Gauteng,” Clr Khumalo said.
