The school’s 1st team welcomed Sandringham High School as their opponents. A penalty awarded to Sacred Heart College opened up the scoring in the first half. The game was intense, with both teams fighting for the title.
After an incredible defensive performance, Sacred Heart College managed to hold on to their 1-0 lead and became league champions of 2013.
Sacred Heart College’s A soccer teams were entered into the Johannesburg Championship Soccer League, which took place from April to August. This league comprised of 20 teams from all over the Johannesburg. The different age groups were divided into two competing groups and, by a points-based scoring system, the top two schools from each group were determined.
There were eight competing schools in the U/15 age group. Sacred Heart’s boys performed well during the group stages and qualified for the semi-final round.
There were six competing schools within the group in the open age group. The school’s 1st team proved to be the pride of the school and played each match with tremendous passion and intensity. The boys qualified for the semi-final round and, subsequently, qualified for the finals.
The school commended the 1st team for their achievements.
“They have played with pride and integrity and have upheld the ethos of the school. We thank their coach, Richard Mosikidi, and team manager, Cindy Niken, for the time and effort put in for this season’s successes,” said Naomi Meyer.
