Modderfontein church turns 60

The St Francis in the Wood church in Modderfontein has served Modderfontein and surrounding areas for 60 years.

It is a small, stone church nestled beneath the tall pine trees at the entrance to Modderfontein in Queen Street.

The church of St Francis in the Wood is a familiar landmark, which for 60 years has seen to the spiritual needs of many who live, and have lived, in Modderfontein.

Built by the fundraising efforts of numerous members of the community, together with the assistance of AECI, the first stone was laid on August 15, 1953, by Dr Edwin Tabener, the then Factory manager of AECI.

The church has gone from strength to strength over the years and still serves the community with its bells ringing out each Sunday morning.

A Jubilee Eucharist will be held on August 18 at 11am for all past and present parishioners and friends of the parish. This will be followed by a celebratory lunch held in the grounds of the church.

Anyone keen to be part of this special occasion should contact Chapel Warden, Carol Olive, on 082 659 2132 or email colive@mweb.co.za to book a place.
