St Andrew’s achieves silver

St Andrew’s School for Girls hockey players won silver in both the Howell and Pullen Hockey finals on August 3.

The eighth Pullen and Howell hockey trophy finals finished in a nail-biting final for both events. St Mary’s Waverley beat St Andrew’s School for Girls in the Howell U/16 final and the Pullen U/18 final.

The Pullen and Howell Trophy is an annual girls’ U/18 and U/16 hockey tournament, which attracts some of the top hockey playing teams in Johannesburg. Each age group hosts 16 teams in four pools. “We continually aim to improve the standard of hockey by allowing as many teams as possible to take part. This year we invited more of the Afrikaans schools,” said Mr Rob Pullen, the Director of Sport at St Andrew’s. EG Jansen, Transvalia, Hugenote, Jeugland and Kempton Hoër also participated in the event.

Both finals were played at St Andrew’s School for Girls.

In the U/16 section, St Mary’s scored first and St Andrew’s had to work hard in the second half to equalise. The result had to be decided on penalty strokes which St Mary’s won. In the last 15 minutes of the Pullen Trophy, St Mary’s scored first, but five minutes later St Andrew’s equalised to send the game into a penalty shoot out which was won by St Mary’s.

“The goalkeepers this year were the players of the tournament, all the four top teams in each section had the goalkeepers to thank,” said Mr Pullen.

St Mary’s finished the U/18 Pullen Trophy final in first place. St Andrew’s School for Girls finished second and EG Jansen finished third.
