Zombies ruffle feathers

Zombie Run South Africa will launch its second event as part of the planned agenda at the forthcoming Geekfest in Bedfordview with the theme, The Zombie Run Geek Twilight.

The event will take place on August 31 at the Goldfields Showgrounds, Morninghill. Registrations open at 2pm and the games commence at 4.30pm.

The run will have an Amazing Race flair and zombie hordes to satisfy blood-thirsty geeks.

The Zombie Run is five kilometres of gut-wrenching, blood-pumping, sweat-dripping fear, which debuted in the country on July 7. The themed race is not a typical five kilometre trail run, unless of course, the trail is infested with an army of marauding zombies.

By using the popular zombie theme, Zombie Run South Africa creates a running narrative on a racecourse designed to simulate an apocalypse. Participants either run through the course track as zombies, or living zombie prey. Participants must run to safety, while dodging an imaginatively harrowing barrage of apocalyptic carnage.

At this event, normal, everyday, warm-blooded runners will turn themselves into blood sucking, flesh eating, zombies. If their prey survives, a gathering will follow the race.

Proceeds from the geek event will be donated to BirdLife SA for their Important Bird Area project. To date, R27 500 was donated from the inaugural event in Johannesburg. This was shared between the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Carnivore Conservation Program and FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

The donation target for BirdLife SA has been set at R25 000.
