The incident occurred on August 18.
“A 34-year-old man was walking to work when he was approached by an unknown man who pointed a firearm at him and demanded his cellphone,” said Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, of the Jeppe SAPS.
Three other men and a woman joined the suspect and started to search the complainant for valuables. The complainant had a firearm, was overpowered and disarmed by the suspects when he tried to draw it. The suspects fled the scene but the woman came back and took the complainant’s bag, which had a firearm magazine with twelve rounds of ammunition, a helmet and house keys. The suspects fired one shot in the air and threatened to shoot the complainant if he followed them.
“A case of armed robbery was opened and five suspects aged between 20 and 34 have been arrested,” said Warrant Officer Munyai. The suspects will appear in the Jeppe Magistrate’s Court soon and investigations are continuing.
