Demand for fibre optics grows in Edenvale

A growing number of businesses located in South Africa’s 'fibre-zones' are switching their internet connection from ADSL to fibre optic cables.

A fibre zone is defined as an area in which fibre optic cables have been laid, such as in large parts of Edenvale.

According to Mr Andre Joubert, from Mweb Business, the fibre footprint in the country is still limited, largely to high-density commercial areas.

In some areas, such as Edenvale which has been hit particularly hard by copper cable theft, many businesses have turned to fibre optics, as the glass fibre cable has no resale value and is therefore less likely to be stolen.

“However, we are also finding that businesses simply want fibre optics because of the generally superior performance it delivers, since it is a symmetrical service,” said Mr Joubert.

This means that upload and download speeds are the same and usually remain consistent.

Fibre optics is ideal for businesses that require consistency and greater reliability for their internet requirements.
