We are a third generation firm of monumental masons and have, with appreciation, had the support of the Edenvale and Bedfordview communities for more than six decades.
The history of a nation is reflected in its monuments and the distressing reality is that vandalism of monuments, as evidenced by the damage of the grave sites of Sir George Farrar, are no longer an exception but a growing national problem.
We have contacted Councillor Bill Rundle to offer our assistance with repairs to the Farrar Gate Graves as a courtesy to our local heritage and history.
Some years ago we, due to circumstances, decided to follow the popular path of downsizing and purchased a unit in the Farrargate Complex in St Andrews.
Little did we realise, to our joy, that our unit was adjacent to the original natural stone gatehouse with its natural hewn stone section and bearing testimony to the natural beauty, longevity and resilience of what our creator has blessed us with.
When driving out of my driveway every morning, I might not have a sea view, but I can see and reflect on this stately structure and the history it represents.
Sad to say but true, when a nation loses its love of art, it loses its heart and with the technological advantages in the stone industry as with all industries, we no longer have old stone masons with hammers and chisels who produce structures like this and hence the demise of natural-hewn stone to be replaced by machine-polished profiles and finishes.
It is simply the price we pay for progress.
As a family we deem it a blessing to be able to have, right in our midst’s, a structure which not only bares testimony to Sir Farrar and his family but which is part of our heritage and history.
Our appreciation to all those who care.
