The community of Observatory is concerned about the number of liquor outlets operating in the area.
This is evident in the objections from the community regarding a proposed new liquor outlet in the Observatory area.
Some members of the community believe there are enough liquor outlets already operating in the area. There are over 100 liquor outlets operating from Joe Slovo Drive, on the outskirts of Yeoville, to De La Rey Street in Observatory.
Mr Maurice Smithers, the executive director of the Yeoville Bellevue Community Development Trust, says some communities are already locked in a cycle of alcohol abuse.
“For some people, it is easier to get drunk than to read a book,” said Mr Smithers.
He said the unnecessary availability of alcohol means more exposure for communities, particularly the poorer sections.
“It leads to more social and economic problems, which the community does not need,” said Mr Smithers.
