Residents take charge of street
The residents of Frances Street in Observatory have decided to take charge of their street and have formed a committee.
The committee will aim to form avenues of communication between the residents in order to deal with the issues that affect them most. They have also started a number of social media groups.
“We have started a Facebook group called Frances Street Community in order to start communicating with people in the community. On this platform, they can share what they hear and see,” said Mr Ashraf Nakhoodia, one of the initiators of the committee and a resident of Steyn Street.
The committee has decided to use the social media platform Whatsapp to send each other messages, videos and images.
“Whatsapp is live, fast and instant and we already have people exchanging information on the platform,” said Mr Nakhoodia.
He pointed out that this is part of gathering the evidence needed in order to highlight the need for visible policing in the area.
“We ask that people call the police when they see something illegal happening in the area,” said Mr Nakhoodia. He said the initiative would initially have a slow start, but would pick up.
“It’s positive, we are moving in the right direction, but it needs to be a community effort in order for it to work,” said Mr Nakhoodia.
