The challenge is designed to encourage pupils to be proactive in solving problems in their environment.
This year’s challenge was to overcome Global Warming, focusing on the greenhouse effect, and the negative effects of over population and the burning of fossil fuels.
The Department of Education sends each province the outline of the task and the districts then evaluate all the high schools’ efforts in a single task called the Blue IQ Challenge. The judging for the Ekhurhuleni district event took place for the first round at Hoërskool Brandwag on October 11.
Edenvale High School entered a grade 8 boys team as well as a grade 9 girls team under the guidance of Mr Terence Fletcher, the Technology teacher. The girls’ team came first in the district finals round with a project that focused on the use of salt water and using the ions in the salt to generate electricity to turn a boat propeller to give unaided movement.
The use of physical and life science, as well as mathematics, is encouraged to assist and provide new ideas to help mankind.
The winning team members from Edenvale High School are Sarah King (team leader), Kyla Cross, Andrea Cronje, Bianca Ley and Urvashi Dayanand.
The finals of the next round take place at Emperors Palace on October 30.
